Ovarian cysts are sacs filled with fluid and are located on, or around an ovary. Functional cysts are fairly common in women of child bearing age and they usually disappear without the need for treatment within a few weeks. Women who are past menopause and develop symptoms of an ovarian cyst however, should seek medical attention as soon as possible. Cancer will need to be ruled out in women of that age group. There are times though, that having a laparoscopic ovarian cystectomy may be required for any woman.
